I was reading up on some computers I'd like to buy for gaming and I saw that one had a "768MB Asus 8800GTX Video Card." This looks awefully familiar to the card from the GeForce 8 series ("768MB GeForce 8800GTX ").

My questions are: What is Asus? A copycat of Geforce video cards? Is it better than Geforce or worse or the same thing?

Video card chipsets come in basically 2 different types, Nvidia and ATI, many independent manufacturers produce various versions of video cards from one or both of these chipsets. Realistically, the Geforce Series numbers simply help identify the various versions of the cards on the market, the same applies to ATI type cards, these then help you get the correct driver for your specific video card and operating system from either ATI's or Nvidia's website.

This is similar to HP, Dell, Gateway, and many other computer manufacturers, they assemble the computers, but they don't directly produce the individual components themselves, yet they display their logo's and names on the final product. The same holds true in many other markets as well.

As for what is Asus, Asus is a manufacturing and distribution company for many computer components such as motherboards, video cards, as well as actual computers and laptops, while they actually produce their own motherboards and video cards, the chipset you are asking about is based on the Nvidia Geforce series of chipsets and drivers.

Esentially they are the same thing, it is just a matter of who produced the card itself. It could have been Asus, Diamond, EVGA, XFX, or several others.

while you are going to play at resolutions bigger than approximately 1680x1050 then you somewhat would be wanting to get the 1GB version of the cardboard. playing at resolutions under which will make no distinction on the two card. after all, the two those playing cards are shitty for gaming. If i've got been you, i does no longer enable the sound of the fan on a card placed you off identifying to purchase it. I propose even the terrific playing cards that have followers that should blow lots of air do no longer sound THAT undesirable. human beings placed too lots inventory in how the fan sounds while somewhat, they are not extra noisy than a ceiling fan.

Asus is a brand, similar to the brand Gigabyte or MSI. It just means that Asus is manufacturing the graphics card with further modification to that of the requirement set by Nvidia (owners of GeForce). GeForce is a brand of the Nvidia company.

Nvidia makes the GPU and the reference design for a graphics card. There are lots of makers of Geforce cards; EVGA, XFX, MSI, Palit, Inno 3D, ASUS, Gigabyte, etc. They may follow the reference design or create their own variants.

ASUS is major manufacturer of motherboards for OEMs (like Hp), for retail and for enthusiasts. ASUS also makes laptops, graphics cards, DVD drives, wireless devices, etc.
