aussie_witch_50; the sword you describe is from Volsunga Saga, it's named Gram which Sigurd pulled from an apple tree that Odin had driven the sword into.
H.Potter fan: Tyrfing is mentioned in one of the Eddic lays and if I remember correctly, one of the Sagas. Gram though is the more recognizable one of the two.
EDIT: ok, I am am home now and able to hit the books.....
Gram is mentioned in the Poetic Edda; specifically in Reginsmál, Fáfnismál, Sigrdrífumál, Brot af Sigurþarkviðu, and in Sigurþarkviða hin skamma.
Tyrfing is mentioned only as a son of Arngrím. This is from the Hollander translation, I would check others but they are lent out at the moment. I suggest if anyone wants information, directly look up the source material and shy away from Wikipedia as much as possible, a great place to start is Northvegr.org, probably the best place on the 'net.
EDIT 2: Hervarar saga is where the story regarding the sword Tyrfing can be found. Interestingly enough, Tyrfing shares some similar attributes to the sword Freyr has. The sword originally was Arngrims who then gave it to his son Angantyr. It does not however, state anywhere that the sword belonged to Odin.
Rob: T.U. for you for catching that. It was Sigmund's first and then reforged for Sigurd.

I have spent a bit of time searching and it is only referred to as Odin's sword....
Here is a typical extract, but the sword is not named...
Sigmund performed many marvelous deeds of war with Odin's sword, but the time came that Odin had appointed for him to die. In the middle of a battlefield Sigmund saw the same figure that had entered his father's hall long years before. Odin touched the sword with his wooden staff and it broke in two. Sigmund was then mortally wounded by the foe. His wife tried to save him, but he calmly accepted Odin's will, knowing he would enter Valhalla. Yet he requested that the fabulous sword be allowed to be joined back together for another hero, which Odin granted.
Blessed Be... )O(
