You might check into something along the lines of a comfort series mountain bike. It is a more upright riding position as opposed to the more aggressive positioning of the true mountain bike. Unfortunately they usually come stock with an adjustable stem which is not supposed to be used for offroad riding (the through the woods thing, especially aggressive off roading). You may check into the sedona line by Giant. The base model is about $320 and they go up (better shock & components as the price goes up. The Specialized equivalent is the expedition line, and Trek's version is the navigator. All will run in about your price range.

I've gone 143 mph on a motorcycle before. That was pretty fast, but obviously the scofflaws above me have blown away my top speed by a good margin.

In a Mustang 5.0 convertible (with top down) on Interstate 8 in Arizona...all the gages were moving...gas was going down, engine temp. up, oil pressure up, rpms up, mph up to 140mph.

well on a interstate i was at about 120 MPH for may be 5 mins to get my mom to shut up. i said if she didnt shut up id drive faster to get to our destination cuz she was annoying me as hell.. so she shut up and i brought my speed back down. not many cars on the road
slowest iv driven is 0.5 MPH straight for 25 hours. yes i said 0.5
