Thomas Edison. He had a lot of people under him, all working on the the electric bulb, that never got any credit, other inventors at the time also had working light bulbs, he invented the electric chair and electrocuted an elephant all to show that A.C. was dangerous so people would go to him instead of Tesla.

I think if you look closely you can find flaws in anyone. But my candidates would include Thomas Paine, who wrote well but was kind of a crank, Andrew Jackson, who drank too much and was an incompetent president, and that more recnt icon, Ronald Reagan, who was a genial airhead who got credit for much he had little to do with and managed to avoid blame for just about anything.

Ronald Reagan - he was pretty war like and decreased all spending except increasing the military budget. Yet, it was time for change in Russia and they were more peaceful. It all just happened on his watch but he had nothing to do with it. The first day in office the Iranian hostages just happened to be released. He ignored AIDS for more than one term.
