I got an FZ6 as my second bike. It would be possible to get one as a first bike after getting your licence; but it would not be a good bike to learn on. The FZ6 has a reputation for being a good all-rounder, and has a nice upright style; but you should really know how to ride before you get one. A lot of people say that the FZ6 is just a de-tuned R6, and therefore an 'easy' bike; but it will still do 200km/hr, and can get a new rider into trouble. I learnt on a Honda 250 V-twin, and moved up to an FZ6 shortly after getting my full licence. Here in Australia, an FZ6 is not an approved learner's bike, because the powewr to weight ratio is too great. As Igotworms noted, the Suzuki SV650 is a much easier bike to ride (and less expensive). I actually got rid of my FZ6, and kept the 250, which was a fun bike to ride, until I was confident to move up to a larger V-twin.

A sports bike is generally not the best first bike. They respond very fast to control inputs and demand close attention. You'll be making some poor inputs, it's better if the bike is more "forgiving" and allows you to put more attention on the road, cars, etc. Something like a cruiser.
But two things are the most important. Good safety gear and training. A motorcycle dealer can help you with finding both, even if you didn't buy the bike from him.

The FZ6 is an awesome bike, but it might be a bit big for a new rider. Suzuki makes a sv-650 or try a 650r from kawasaki, they are about the same size but they are 2 cylinders instead of 4-more torque, less hp. Sporty bikes are the best to start on because they handle better.

No, it's not. You should start on a 250 (or 500 at the very most).
Look into Ninja 250/500s.
The FZ6 has the same engine as the R6 (which would kill a noob rider very quickly), but it is detuned.
Don't listen to anybody who says it's ok to start on a 600cc sport bike. They don't have your best interest in mind.
Check out this forum for noob rider info...

Good luck and be safe!

I love these questions.... "is this 600cc motorcycle a good bike for me?" "won't I look good on this 650cc motorcycle, I want it for my first bike?"
buy safe to learn. Most motorcycle owner's sell what ever bike they have in two years anyway.
first take a motorcycle safety course ( http://www.msf-usa.org )
then do your research. the EX250 by Kawasaki can easily blow by 1L and 750cc bikes in the twisties. (done it)
I always get asked what I did to my ninja at the bottom of a mountain, after I pass the much heavier, and larger bikes (my bike is completely stock, save braided brake hoses). The truth of the matter is: I don't have to slow down as much for the turns, and keep my speed better.
do your research on what is considered a good beginner's bike from real experts who have looked at the statistics, not just other people's opinions. popular opinion, instead of personal knowledge could make your scenery include a crying mother, and stone monuments.
keep the shiny up, and rubber down.

No WAAYyyy... I used to owned that bike... too much power for new rider to handle.
If you have never been on a bike you before, should start with bikes in the 200-300cc Class, Avoid European bikes as you first bikes, even the 200cc Ducati is mighty powerful, Get a Kawasaki 250cc I forget the name... a friend of mine used to have it, it 's quite easy to handle, and very forgiving for new riders.

Don't listen to the guys who said it is a sport bike. This is a practical bike with upright riding position and soft suspension. A very good choice for a first bike. Suzuki makes a similar bike in a two cylinder that you should check out too.

it depends...i u have to buy a new one, its ok because the fz6s2 has 98 hp, but the other, the "normal new fz6 has around 76 hp....to me its ok!!! the old model of fz6 has 98 hp....that are a bit too much for a beginner....but i think it should be ok aswel....u just have to drive slowly!!!
i got my driving license last november, and i bought a kawasaki er6n as first moto...and its really good!!! easy to drive, bur even fast if u want!!!
u can also buy a ducati monster 695...its really good!!!
