About a week ago my car just quit with no warning. All the lights, air condition, and radio work so I know it's not the battery or altinater (don't know if I spelled that right). My power brakes and power steering stopped working when the car quit. There's a clanging noise, like a piston hitting a valve, coming from the enginge, which suggests that my timing is off. About how much would that cost to fix, or could it be something else.

Everyone here is right. You need to have it towed in and checked out. It sounds like a timing belt or chain issue. The belt could of broke or jumped a few teeth. IF the engine cranks over very very fast, then it is probably a broken timing belt. Nobody can be sure though.

Your car quit, but your AC still works? Do you mean, the light on your controls turns on? AC runs off the engine and doesn't work unless the engine is turning.
Anyway, back to the problem. The car starts? Or do you hear the clanging from trying to start it? I had a timing belt die on me and when one of those goes, you car stops and doesn't start. Now, if your piston is hitting a valve, you could damage the piston and the valve as well, meaning it would be an expensive repair. When my belt went, it was a little over $400 to replace, but there was no other damage.

Is the vehicle working now, will it start up are dose it purely spin over, if it is working and has a foul omit or purely working tough ,then your probable ok, yet while it no longer working in any respect you should stroll faraway from the deal, you should be stepping into vast funds if it 's no longer working, the pinnacle or valves must be screwed up, if the timing belt broke.

I cant diagnose your car over the Internet but if your piston is hitting you valve and you can hear it, its done. Your going to have to take it to a mechanic.

I doubt if it is your ignition timing. You have some mechanical failure with the car. Most likely the timing belt or chain depending on your car. You will find it will cost several hundred dollars to repair.

good luck.

For the timing to have changed so drastically, it would have to be a failure of a timing belt or chain. It may be something else. It will be expensive if you have engine damage.
