How about a Firemouth Meekis? These are a large south American cichlid. I have seen people who where succesful keeping these fish with an oscar. One should fit in your tank size with one oscar just fine. I would not put any other fish in though.

Here is more about the firemouth:

EDIT: firemouths can hold there own with a larger and more aggresive fish without a problem. They are not meek in the least, though they have a "live and let live" kind of personality.

Oscars can grow quickly and become aggressive towards tank mates of other species. I would recommend that you look into what type of environment you want to create, and familiarize your self with compatible tank mates. With good imagination, and proper equipment you can create a beautiful environment in a 60 gallon aquarium and have an Oscar as the center of attention. If this is going to be your first aquarium, Oscars are a great species to begin with. Keep in mind that a 2 or 3 inch little Oscar will quickly grow much larger. South American cichlids will be good mates for your Oscar.

I have always liked the shovel nosed catfish in oscar tanks also you see a lot of pacu's with oscars, but that could easily overfill your tank within a year to 18 months.

I even have the two a cat and a fish tank. i discovered that one fish tank is sufficient to tide me over till I have been given sufficient money to purchase yet another tank. The cat, although, expenses much less money than the fish tank will interior the long-term. I fairly might flow with an more suitable tank because of the fact my cat is fat and sassy and does not like all different cats. in case you somewhat love fish get a fish tank. in case you opt for for yet another cat you have already got a fish tank. it somewhat is purely my opinion and it easily relies upon on your character.

Two oscars will fill a 65 or 55 gallon tank completely. It'll be like having a couple of nice quiet puppies.

1-2 plecos (the larger type), a Jack Dempsey, Jewel cichlid, porthole catfish, clown knife, butterfly fish.
A firemouth may be a little timid with an oscar.
I would strongly suggest no Pacus.
