Paley’s watchmaker—what is the point of the analogy?

The point is to prove the existence of a designer of things, namely God - a bold (ad)venture.
The key argument is that "if you look at a watch, you can easily tell that it was designed and built by an intelligent watchmaker. Similarly, if you look at some natural phenomenon X you can easily tell that it was designed and built by an intelligent creator/designer."

Well, many things are logical, but they're still not true. As Daniel Dennett puts it, "you never see a pot making a potter or a horseshoe making a blacksmith", but one day Darwin came in through the back door. He still proves them all wrong.
