Yes the present countries of Austria and Hungary were part of the Roman Empire. But in the 1st century A.D. large numbers of warlike tribes began to settle in what is now Austria. Vienna was originally a military outpost called "Vindobona". Like Cologne it was established to keep the German speaking barbarians from entering the Roman Empire. But after the fall of the Roman Empire great numbers of German speaking people settled in Central Europe. Hungary was a province in the Roman Empire since 14 B.C. called "Pannonia". Later the Magyars from Asia settled in what is now Hungary. The Danube River formed the northern border of the Roman Empire in Central Europe. But Roman armies sometimes crossed the Danube to fight battles with the barbarians. You might be thinking of the Rubicon River that Caesar crossed to show that he couldn't be stopped.
