I think a huge factor is that America is do diverse. A Protestant can live with Catholics to their left, Muslims to the right, and atheists across the street. Friends are different religions so they don't go services together or anything church-related like they used to. I'm sure if you went into a community of like all Catholics or any other religion, you will see they practice a lot more and hold those morals closer as a community.

Because as our culture progresses, the radical (libral) becomes the concervitive. 50 years ago no one would have batted an eye at a black public beating. Now the perpetraitors would go to jail. As we become more libral, we get more athiests and less creationists. We believe more in freedom of thought and belief, which gives people the room to not believe. This is just a simple process we must go through, or it may well be a phase, we wont know unless we wait. But do not be fooled by the biblical people saying it's the end of the world. The universe is 13.7 billion years old, is mankind really so arrogant as to think it will happen in their 200,000 year timespan?

Religion continues to be a great part in peoples lives today, maybe not in western culture, but other cultures around the world, it is still a great aspect of peoples lives. If your question is pertaining to western civilizations, then I would have to say that the development of separation of church and state, and the advancement of modern science played a great part in bring a gap between what one believes and what one practices. One could also point to the educational societies implementing different theories on creation.

It still does play an important part in most people's lives. Even those who are athiest had to sort their their own beliefs. A true athiest would not need to make a conscience decision to not partake in religion.

I believe tolerance and respect of another's belief's and acceptance within a multi religion family has decreased the number of lower level (personal and community) wars fought in the name of religion, and this may give a false impression that it plays a minor role in our country in the 21st century.

Some have tried to conclude that God does not exist, that it is not scientific to believe in a creator. The smarter men think they are the dumber they get. The most recent attack has come from the homosexual movement, they see religion as their final frontier. The bible condemns homosexuality and they feel if they can get rid of religion they will be free to do as they please unrestrained. There is nothing new under the sun, the Roman's gave into homosexuality right before their collapse and history is again repeating itself.

I think there are many reasons. Many people have moved from the more organized, traditional faiths to a more open Spirituality. For example, I am a Christian Mystic, my spiritual life as I understand it is my life, but I do not belong to any organized religion. In many of the more organized faiths there is a certain way, a certain interpretation that most follow, & for many it's not enough. I think people are moving from wanting to know about God to wanting to know God.

people are taught many different things now days! We are not forced to follow a religion! Evolution is being taught in schools, people have been fighting for their beliefs all of history! People just want to be free now, with their own ideas, feelings, physical proof!

Have you noticed that when we (people or society) get comfortable our needs are minimal and things go smoothly, that we find less need for structure, rules and tradition. We tend to let things happen as they may, fulfil our desires as we feel them, live one day at a time, fly now , pay later.

The short answer to your question is: greed and complacency.

Where Christianity is concerned, it's just biblical prophesy being fulfilled. Jesus spoke of this decline.
