A withdrawal would be very foolish.
As long as we have a strong presence in Iraq, that dramatically interferes with the ability of the Muslim terrorists to build up a strong presence in the Middle east.
As annoying as the Muslim terrorists are, they are nothing with respect to their military strength compared to Imperial Japan and Germany during World War II.
When I compare what we have to deal with in Iraq compared to what our parents had to deal with during Worlld War II and even Korea, by comparison Iraq is nothiing.
We need to occupy Iraq the way we occupied Germany and Japan for many years after World War II until we had a new generation trained and the remaining NAZIS living in nursing care facilities or old age retirement homes.
The reason that we have Germany and Japan as strong allies today is because we occupied them for many years after World War II, and gradually eliminated the NAZI's and their sympathizers.
Our occupation demonstrated to the NAZI sympathizers that there was no hope of the NAZIs ever coming back. It took many years to do that.
It did not happen overnight.
We had to grow a new generation of Germans and Japanese and we had to censor very heavily what they were taught so that they would not be taught the old Imperial Japanese and NAZI ways.
Germany and Japan are excellent examples of what we can accomplish if we are willing to occupy an enemy country for years and completely remake the population with a new generation that has been trained properly and has been kept completely free of the old patterns of behavior of the previous generation.
We must do the same in Iraq.
We must grow a new generation of Iraqi children whose upbringing is heavily censored so that they will not be taught the old ways of the Muslim terrorists or the Baath party thugs.
Only when the new generation is fully trained, and free of Muslim Terrorists and Baath Party thugs and ready to take over can we withdraw from Iraq .That will be at least 30 to 40 years from now.
Withdrawal is absolute nonsense.
We have the choice of paying for defense and occupying Iraq or paying staggering sums of money in tribute to Muslim terrorists and Baath Party thugs if we pull out.

It matters little. Bush wants $197,000,000,000 (~$14 billion/month) to fund this war through 2008.
Reduce the costs. Either pull out completely or figure a way to drop the costs to around $1 to 2 billion/month.

No. How would drawing down by 5,000 troops make a difference other then take valuable boots on the ground out of the fight?

Not really. I don't think the Iraqi government would care one way or the other about 5,000 troops withdrawing.
