I was watching CBS' game show where you guess how Americans voted in a poll. The question was 'Do you think the world would be a better place if America ruled it?'
Only 19% in the poll said yes. How sad. 81% of Americans polled obviously do not have a favorable opinion of America.
That question does NOT ask if you think America should invade another country. It doesn't suggest forcing ideas/democracy on other countries. It simply asks if America was in charge of the world, would it be a better place. And apparently 81% of those polled think America's government is worse than those who stone you to death for an opinion, or murder women for being outside without a male relative at her side, etc. This is where all the Bush bashing has gotten us. How sad.

Glen: LMFAO at YOU for not understanding the question, like I knew you people wouldn't. That's why I stressed that it is NOT, I repeat NOT a question of whether or not you believe they SHOULD, it is simply asking if they ruled the world would it be a better place. I take the question as meaning: Do you agree with America's government and they way they run things.

IT WAS NOT A QUESTION OF WHETHER OR NOT AMERICA SHOULD RULE THE WORLD - IT WAS A QUESTION OF DO YOU AGREE WITH AMERICAN POLITICS AND THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT. DO YOU THINK OUR COUNTRY DOES IT BETTER.
No wonder it was only 19%. It's not that THAT many people are anti-American, it's just that they are stupid.
To clarify, I would NOT want America running the world and don't think we should try. We should only try to keep the peace in the world because that does have an affect on us.

Everyone on earth would be free. There would be no more genocide happening in places like Darfur. Kids wouldn't go hungry and they'd get an education.

Well, Jeff, the question then is "Is the US form of federalism the best form of government in the world?" And a lot of people in the world and even some US citizens would say, "NO WAY!" Among these folks is one General Douglas MacArthur who presided over the drafting of the Japanese Constitution. When urged by Pres. Truman to write a constitution based on the US form of federalism MacArthur declined and went with a parliamentary form of gov't and instituted a Constitutional Monarchy more like the UK's gov't than that of the US. So when you say that 81% don't have a favorable view of America that is simply not true...they just think that there may possibly be a better form of pure democracy and other styles of gov't that might be better.

America is having enough trouble ruling anything at the moment. The poll was better than could be expected given the fact that we have a leader and pals who are running rampant and no one is stopping them.
No America should not rule the world... they should clean their own closet first.. then look around and still stay the hell out of everyone else business...
On the hypothetical question of whether the world would be better off IF ruled by Americans.. I still say no.. and that does not mean I disrespect my country.. it just means I am quite aware that we are not doing a very good job in our own house at the moment.... SO why would we inflict it on others. remember, there are many, many countries in the world that are doing just fine and would certainly not welcome the help of Americans.
And, no, I am not bashing Bush or America.. I am just stating an opinion. I happen to love this country.. with all its warts. thanks.

Not wanting the United States to rule the world has nothing at all to do with being anti-American. I don't think ANY one country should rule the world. How sad you think otherwise.
ETA: Whether one believes this question to be about a favorable opinion of the United States doesn't negate the fact that the question cannot, in all honesty, be answered with anything other than a "no" when one does not believe the world should be ruled by one country.

People in other countries have their own love of their own homeland just like we do. Many are not uncivilized, not uneducated, and not too ignorant to run their own countries as they see fit. Would you want some other country ruling over us? What right do we have to rule other countries. Do you see us as imperialists? Bush bashing has nothing to do with it. We don't own the world and we shouldn't own the world. I think you are misinterpreting the answer. If other countries want to copy our ways, that would be wonderful. Nobody in this country thinks stoning people is civilized. The big word in the question is "rule".

There was a time when leaders in India were in the company of commies and had formed NAM-
"Non Aligned Movement! Then people were supporting the US.
Later leaders changed their stand and tried to be too close to Uncle Sam.At that point of time, US became the sole super world power and wanted to establish its hegemony over the world. Then came 9/11 and Bush's GWAT!
US's occupation of Iraq and making it a land of bomb blasts, have made people of this country also apathetic towards America.

The question did NOT ask if we were anti-American or if we think America's government is worse than those in other countries.
Just because we're the best government and best country on the planet doesn't mean we should rule the world.
Your negative assumptions are your own and using them to judge your countrymen is what is sad.

I see your point about stoning people without a trial for adultery and revenge killings and whatnot, but as far as the US ruling the world... I think the world could do better than a country where half of the inmates of federal prisons are there for nonviolent drug offenses. I realize we're the best option on the planet at the moment, but I do think we're too far from perfect to justify making our system universal. I keep hoping Liberty will break out somewhere.

What that poll says is that only 19% of Americans are so narrow-minded, intolerant, and bigoted that they think they have the right--or wisdom--to force others to submit to their notion of what "ought tobe."
In short--Americans are not buying the right-wing platform of hatred and brutality. That's no surprise. AMERICA is a society of decent people who mostly respect other's right to live their lives the way they see fit. It's the extremists on the right who don't fit in and don't belong in America.
