Juvenile court is for minors, criminal court is for adults. Juvenile court will be more informal and the process will be modified to take into account the age of the child.

Juvenile court is different from criminal court, because for 1 you're dealing with minors. The circumstances in which they hand down punishment is different from an adult. Very rarely do they handout life sentences for a kid that TP'S your house. With juveniles the system tries to deter the kid from insulent behavior, that's why we have probation. Eventhough, there are cases we hear about and they're bizzare, like the "Columbine Shooting", which would have been a monumental case had the suspects not killed themselves. Criminal court is the "Big Time" when it comes to crimes. In criminal court the cases don't always make it to court, because, maybe the DA can guarantee a conviction and the defense is always trying to get the best deal possible for there client. Criminal court = State Penitentary, and Juvenile court = a fine, Community Service, 6 to 18 months in county, or the worst case scenario YA ( Penitentary for minors ), that is until they're old enough to go to the Pen with the big boys. Juvenile court is suppose to be the solution to teenage delinquency, only difference is no ones going to expunge your criminal record when you are an adult.

I hope this works good luck with whatever you're doing!

It is not a criminal court in most states. It has jurisdiction over neglected, abused, or delinquent juveniles. A "conviction" in juvenile court is not considered to be a criminal conviction. The juvenile is merely adjudicated delinquent and in need of rehabilitation. Also, and most importantly, the records are sealed.

This answer will vary from state to state, but generally, juvenile court is for "delinquent acts", this being defined as an act that would be considered a crime if comitted by an adult. Juvenile court is closed to the public, and juveniles can not be sent to jail or prison, just to a secure juvenile facility.

The most significant differences are sentencing limitations, and the automatic sealing of all records. (If they are REALLY sealed, why keep any record at all? )
