The development in India and China and the fact that no new large oil fields have been found in years means that the price of oil is going to increase over the long term, no matter what we do.

As citizens we should drive more fuel efficient cars, which would lower our costs and reduce the demand for oil and so lower the price of gas. This is a two for. Expecting the government to protect us from our own stupidities will not be all that successful, but putting efficiency standards on new cars or taxing gas guzzlers might help. Also banning large SUV's from roads that do not permit truck traffic would discourage their purchase. Mass transit sounds good but it is only fuel efficient in areas with high population densities, and since most people live in spread out suburbs and rural areas, it is not really a feasible solution for most people.
