Hi,
I am currently on vacation. And am staying in a supposedly nice hotel. Well tonight I saw a cockroach, and am worried. I have quite a bit of luggage and do not want to take any visitors home with me. what do I do? I can't just get rid of my stuff I have too much with me. What can I do to make sure that I do not get an infestation in my own home?

Don't worry about it. One little stray roach does not make an infestation. Report it to the management. I am sure they will be very apologetic and maybe even give you a discount on your room. Then go through your luggage, shake everything out. If you don't see any baby roaches scurrying around, I think you're pretty safe. He could have come from anywhere. Some roaches have very expensive tastes. I realize it's most unpleasant to see one of those creepy things -- I actually saw one on my plane coming home from Italy, but you better believe that I didn't toss my luggage. They have been with us since the caveman days so it shouldn't be that unusual to run into a stray one every now and then in your lifetime. Hopefully the one you saw is DEAD by now so forget him and enjoy the rest of your vacation.

If you have a garage, put the stuff in the garage and set off one of those bug bombs. They have them at most dept. stores for less than $10. Lay out all of the stuff so that it is exposed, and then wash everything and wipe off the luggage with all purpose cleaner to get rid of residue.

Ugh...well, first of all, if you can't go to another apt, keep everything out in the light. They love the dark. Before you leave shake everything out. Maybe even keep your stuff in your car if you have one with you. But try to move to another hotel.
