Parked my car and put it in park the dash board said it was still in drive, but it was parked. tried to start it and it wont start, i can move the automatic stick from gear to gear but it wont start

how do u get it to work if it is the transmission

Sounds like a problem with the tranny so that the car is stuck in drive.

A perplexing problem indeed. If I had to guess I would probably say the PCM(powertrain control module)is either faulty or malfunctioning because of a sensor. If it is says it is still in drive and you can turn it over the problem has overrode your neutral safety switch. Not knowing what kind of car it is makes it really difficult to troubleshoot. Different car makers have different components that can malfunction and cause numerous problems. If I was you I would try to disconnect the battery and let the car's computers reset. You might get lucky and you might not. With electrical problems that is always a good place to start. Good luck
