When I mean filthy it is very dirty. I'm just wondering can a rug be so dirty that a professional steamclean won't help at all ? If it helps even just a little, I will get it done.

I just had my rugs professionally done today and it made a really huge difference. ! The carpet smells clean and fresh and all the stains came out.. .I'm getting a few cans of scothguard tomorrow and spraying the high traffic areas so they don't stain so badly ! I had 2 bedrooms/ 1 set of stairs and a hallway a livingroom/diningroom combo done and it cost under $160 it would've been an additional $40 to have stainguard and some other "treatment" done.. Stanley Steamer's quote was roughly $400 + gas... A local "green" family outfit was around $250-$300... So, I think we did all right.. Call around and get some estimates... It really does help.. I've rented a steamer and it's ok but, not as good... Good luck

It can't hurt to try cleaning the carpet. Get several estimates and make sure they rinse the carpet after shampooing it so that it won't attract more dirt. When they are done the carpets should not be soaking wet. If they are still wet (even kind of wet) make them go over the carpet again with the water extractor until the carpet is rather damp, but NOT wet.

If it has pet stains on it, forget it and invest in new carpet.
If this is one room you can even buy a remnant carpet for a fraction of the cost from the bigger carpet stores. Just call and ask about remnants. If you do it this way, it may end up costing you as much to replace the carpet as to have it cleaned.

I think carpet is nasty tear it out and just use a rug from Wal-Mart over the plywood under it that way when you can afford new carpet you can go get some. I can smell when carpet has be shampooed and its just aw full

If its filthy, but not stained, it will help a lot.
Do your research, and ask for references if you don't do a national brand.
We moved into a house - I swear the previous tenants had changed the oil in their car on the living room carpet - but it all came out!
PS: I like Stanley Steemer, but wait til they have a special.

I agree that using a steam cleaner yourself is better than having a company come. I had a company come and they ruined one of my carpets by using too much liquid and the carpets got stretched out and rippled.

Also, another thing to note. If you have dirt...then that's fine. But if you have deep stains they sometimes come out temporarily and then come back. This has happened to myself as well as my brother.

If the carpet never cleaned in years it's better to replace it, odors may come from the pad under the carpet even after clean the carpet. Also check the floor under the carpet.

I subscribe to consumer reports and it said that the professional steam cleaners are the best. I would definitely recommend one with good references or a nationwide name (I think they recommended SEARS). You will be amazed at how clean and good the carpets look.

It would definitely help. Stains that are set in might not come out, but getting it professionally done would certainly benefit your, and your family's, overall health. You should definitely make sure you use someone reputable, perhaps Stanley Steemer. It certainly won't hurt.
