anything with "Free & Clear" on the front of the bottle is 100% safe for babies and is even recommended more so with children and adults with extremely sensitive skin because of no fragrance or dyes. what you are paying for my dear with the "baby" detergents is the pretty soft baby scent smell and that's it. I have to use "free & clear" detergent because both of my children have ezcema as do i, but they have it worse than i do. save your money b/c let's face it babies are expensive and every penny saved helps. just go ahead and buy the free and clear detergent and save your money unless you just really want the soft baby scent for their clothes.
however i will say this about the baby laundry detergent market......... Totally Toddler Stain Remover ROCKS!!!!
My oldest used to scratch his ezcema (before we knew it was ezcema, crazy military doc said it was heat rash but they were wrong) anyways he scratched so bad he would bleed it was horrible until we got it under control. anyways totally toddler gets out blood with a snap. it's awesome. you can never have too much of that stuff. it gets out about anything and everything

My "What To Expect Within The First Year" book says that you don't need to buy any different detergent than what you normally use. The only way you would need to change it is if your baby has an allergic reaction which you will notice somewhere on the body. I used Tide with Bleach for a long time but I began to love the smell to Baby All so I use that on everything, even my own clothes. I can't find that exact same brand in any stores so I have to order it on Amazon. It comes with 4 bottles, 64 loads each, for 60 USD. It's a good deal, considering how much are in the bottles.

You don't have to use baby detergent for newborns clothes and sheets, however it is recommended in case they have a reaction to the detergent. I used to use 'Lux Flakes' to was the baby's clothes and things in just until the first box was empty and then started to do them with the normal washing. Otherwise you have to wait until you have a full load of baby's clothes to wash. And they are so small their whole wardrobe nearly fits in one load!
I would wash their clothes with normal detergent but if you notice any reaction like itching skin, diaper rash, red bumps etc....on their skin, then try switching to baby detergent. If you or the father has a skin allergy to things like detergent then I would avoid it for the first few months.
Don't be too worried but look out for little things that could be a reaction to the detergent, otherwise I think it should be fine. Or buy a 'sensitive' washing detergent like 'OMO sensitive.
best of luck

You don't HAVE TO use baby detergent.
I never did. I have two toddlers right now. I just used what my husband and I wash our clothes in. Just try the normal stuff and if you see your baby getting a reaction to it, like pimples on his/her arms and legs, or a rash, then you will have to switch to baby detergent up until there a year old.
In most cases though, your baby won't get a reaction.

NO WAY JOSE!!!
I did for a while and it got very expensive. Take one Tee shirt and wash it in BIG PEOPLE detergent. If baby is ok with it then you are fine.
The major thing with baby clothes is the rinse. Make sure that your washer rinses the clothes VERY WELL. If you do that then the detergent is not relevant.

ok people say to use baby detergent but i dont see the point cause yes their skin might be sensitive but they lay one you and who ever is holding them alot and so i dont see the point because they are touching ur clothes and i know u most likely dont use baby detergent on ur stuff..i never used it and have been fine..plus it is pricey for a small box or bottle and u have to buy it all the time...i just used my detergent on the baby's clothes.

Depends on the baby. I've used regular with all of mine, and the only one who broke out was my first. So my parent's got her special baby detergent. But after the first couple of months it was fine and I went back to regular.

I never did-just used the kind I have and never had a problem. In fact...I know many people with babys and they've never used baby detergent unless the kid is irritated by regular.

No, I stopped because i didn't think it cleaned my baby's clothes well when there was poop on them. So i would use regular detergent and ran a 2nd rinse cycle on the clothing.

Nope.
We never did, with any of our kids.
But you do have to be on the lookout, at least at first, for signs of contact dermatitis. Baby skin is super-sensitive.
But try an unscented regular detergent, and maybe do a second rinse, and see what happens.
You can always switch to Dreft if a problem develops.
