why is my 2002 R1 hard to start when the bike is cold?

Engines are always harder to start when they're cold.
Make sure you have the choke on.

I had this problem with a GSXR400 and a XJ600. It both cases it was a weak spark, due to the coil on the gsxr400 and the spark leads on the XJ600. Try changing them.
