While the first two people do have a valid point the argument falls apart when you consider one factor. The fact that murder hurts people and homosexual marriage doesn't. Murder hurts those left behind and often times the person who is murdered suffers before dying so they are hurt as well. Thus there is a logical reason to make murder illegal. Homosexual marriage doesn't hurt anyone anymore than heterosexual marriage. And don't forget that nearly every single argument out there against homosexual marriage is based on religious views but you won't find many atheists that support making murder legal. The only non-religious argument I've heard is the idea that homosexuals are "unnatural." Which is bunk as first off there are numerous members of many different animal species that partake in homosexual sex and even if it could be proven to be unnatural we humans surround ourselves with unnatural things everyday so it's hardly cause to make something illegal. And if the first amendment isn't enough what about the declaration of independence. It says that everyone has the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Banning homosexual marriage would block one route of happiness for numerous people. Personally I think it's only a matter of time before homosexual marriage is made legal and given the same regard as heterosexual marriage. Unfortunately I also think that once people stop discriminating against homosexuals they'll just think of another reason to discriminate against people. It's simply the way we are.

Since your assumption that christians are the only ones interested in banning homosexual marriage is incorrect, the rest of your question is moot.
Your probable but admittedly unstated assumption that the people who are viewed as opposing gay marriage are, in fact, opposed to it, is also incorrect. What a large number, possibly a majority of the opponents are really opposed to is courts legislating this question.
The gay marriage question is a lot more than being either enlightened and open minded or a neanderthal. Questions of precisely how our legal system works and several policy questions come into play that most people ignore because it is easier to just go on and bash the bible-thumpin' rednecks.
Here's a hint: It's not about equality under the law. It's about who gets to benefit from an inequality in the law.

No, that would not violate the First Amendment any more so than laws against murder (which is also a sin).
If the government were to ban the practicing of a certain religion, or directly promote a specific religion, that would be different.

Christians are far from being the ones banning a homosexual marriage. Many others have the same Stone Age mentality as well, not only Christians/.

The law itself has nothing to do with religion. Laws are not chosen based on the religion of the person or people who support or refute them.
The separation of church and state clause refers to the direction that the government cannot dictate a person's religious believes. For example, they cannot tell all Americans to become Catholics, Athiests, or anything else. Likewise it cannot tell us that we have to attend church a certain number of times per week, etc.

there is actually more to it...
do you agree with Zoophilia..??
do you agreee with polygamy??
same sex marriage would lead to unethical standards.
unfortunately, the line has to be drawn somewhere before it gets out of hand...
i have nothing against same-sex marriage but understand the line which needs to be drawn for ethics.....
