I was informed that as long as i tune into a show within the first 30 minutes my DVR would allow me to watch the show from the beginning, I have never been able to get this to work.

Just wondering....thanks,

DVR's constantly record whatever is being watched and retain 30 minutes of history (even if you're not recording the program). If you hit the rewind button on your remote (if you haven't changed the channel in the last 30 minutes), you should be able to rewind "live" TV back 30 minutes. Hope this helps.

A dvr can only record a channel when it is tuned to that channel, so if you tune say NBC 15 minutes into say the office then you have missed that first 15 minutes but from the point you turned it on past there you can rewind fast forward blah blah.

You were misinformed. It is impossible for a DVR to simultaneously record all programs. It only has one or two tuners.

Now, there may be a limited number of shows "on demand", which may allow you to request from the server up to 30 min of past video. In that case, the video is coming from the server and not from your DVR.
