Tea and honey is a great suggestion. Lots of rest, VIt C.
Pineapple juice gives good temporary relief - learned that from a truck stop waitress when on vacation with a son who got sore throats fairly regularly.
I said GOT on purpose. We still have the son, but the sore throats are hopefully a thing of the past because of my next suggestion:
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) You can find it at health food stores or iHerb.com online.
You put 5-10 drops in about 6 oz. of water and gargle. You can swallow if you want, or not. Do that every few hours until the sore throat is gone. It took less than 24 hours with my son, after he had been battling the sore throat for almost a week. He can't do antibiotics because he is allergic. We suspected strep. So, I looked on line and came up with GSE, a natural antibiotic. It also kills yeast, which if you have white splotches is what your sore throat may be caused by.
You can swallow the GSE mixture if you want, but you don't have to. He didn't. I did, other daughter did. It worked for all of us. His was yeast related, so hopefully we can control that now with probiotics. My 2 daughters both had cold induced soar throats and it worked just as well. We're calling it the new miracle cure!!!
As far as how long they last, it depends on how you care for it, and what is causing it. We've had them last a day to two weeks (I was put on complete bedrest years ago for a serious bout with tonsilitis that didn't respond to antibiotics)
Hope that helps.

Try drinking some tea with lemon or honey. I've also read somewhere that Peppermint has some natural bacterial killing stuff in it (and is good on an upset stomach). So drinking some peppermint tea might also be an option to try.
If that doesn't work, there might be some natural throat lonzenges or sprays at a local health food store. However, be prepared to pay $$ for them (probably around $15-$20). They may be able to help your throat without adding any other harsh chemicals that are often found in OTC throat sprays, drops, etc.
If you find that your throat is REALLY bad after a few days, see white splotches, etc, then it's time to get it checked. You may have strep throat, which is very treatable, but contagious.

hot tea always helps me. I have heard that you should stay away from sugars when you have a sore throat, as that only agitates your throat even more. So no sugars in the tea. gargling warm salt water never seemed to help me, maybe because I didn't have the patience to do it a couple times a day. also be sure to take lots of vitamin c, as this will help you get better faster.

You can try hydrogen peroxide and water. I have brushed my teeth with peroxide and baking soda for over 20 years. I have not had a sore throat since. EVER. I have beautiful teeth. Salt water also kills bacteria. It lasts however long it takes to kill the virus or the bacteria that has a hold on you... Could be a week or more, you may have to see a Dr. Sorry about that.

Pour honey into a skillet, squeeze in some fresh lemon juice. Heat it, stir well.. Let it cool down a little. Then while it's still warm, swallow large spoonfulls at a time. The warm honey coats the throat & soothes it. It works better then tea with honey & lemon. Growing up as a hippy kid, this is what my mother always did for us & it works! It's also yummy :)

If you can find them in your area, try comquats (spelling varies, but they are like mini oranges, the size of cherry tomatoes) - kind of sour, but not as sour as lemons. You can eat them whole or make the drink :
Crush 1 to 3 comquats in boiling water (including the skin) and drink (you can also add honey). Eat the remaining pulp after.
But, if you are looking for medicine, then your pharmacy will have tons of known solutions...

Well I use Oregano oil--six drops four times a day. I float the drops on top of some V-8 juice.
Zinc also is claimed to lessen the time of a cold.
