I'm thinking about becoming a surrogate mother. I've always wanted to do this to help a loving, deserving couple. Although I've always wanted to do this out of the goodness of my heart, money does matter at this point of my life. What is your position on surrogacy and, if you know from experience, which agencies pay the most? I live in Texas, but I'm willing to travel. Thanks! And please, no "smart" remarks/comments.

WOW!!! All of you women who have ansawered are soooo understanding and encouraging of this! That's wonderful! I've had a lot of people, even in my family, try to talk me out of this! I could give the child up if it were to a WONDERFUL couple, but it would still be hard! Thank you all!

I've always thought about surrogacy or even egg donation, but at the end of the day I don't know that I could separate myself from the baby to that extent. I know how I felt carrying and delivering my children and feel like I would want to provide that for other childless couples, but it would be so hard to give them up afterward. Money would matter to me too though, its a pretty exhaustive and physically demanding thing to do (body shape, weight etc..) and I would want some sort of compensation. Not thousands and thousands of dollars but enought to pay for the stacks of clothes you have to go through and medical bills and gym for the next however long. I wouldn't feel bad asking for some monetry amount. I think you'll find it varies between surrogates and prospective parents and you have a contractual agreement drawn up by the agency and lawyers. Just google surrogacy in Texas and see what happens.
Good luck with it.

I have really mixed feeling about surrogacy because I think it can be done for both the right reasons and wrong reasons. I think so people see it as a window of opportunity to make some nice chunk of change and others do it in the goodness of their heart. I think it would be easier to be a surrogate mother for someone that you know or are relatively close to rather then a stranger. If you have never been pregnant I am thinking it wouldn't be the wisest choice because I think it would mess with your head mentally knowing that you would not be keeping the child. I also don't think it is a great choice if you have other children that have seen you been pregnant and then at the end of nine months this time you come home from the hospital with no child I think it would be confusing to them. I also think there are so many children in this world that need a good home and are up for adoption that money spent on surrogacy could be spent on a child that is already here. I know it isn't the same, but I think being a parent is more then just sperm and an egg becoming one it is the whole parenting that makes a parent a parent. I don't know anything about the documentary you are talking about, but rather we have been having the same questions because presently someone I work with is doing this now.

I've never done it, but I'd have to say it would take a pretty strong, selfless person to do it! I had thought about it, but came to the conclusion that I could really only do it for a close friend or family member...but thats just me! I don't know which place pays the most, but you do get quite a bit...try checking the phone book and online for lawyers/agencies that do those sorts of things...call them and speak w/ someone from there to get a feel for who/what you're dealing with to be sure you want to do it! Best of luck to you!

I think that's such a wonderful selfless thing to do!! I think you'd have to be a really strong person to carry a child and then give it up, although it would make it easier knowing the people who are getting it are deserving.

I don't know what agencies pay the most, but I would recommend searching around online and then talking to the agency in person. Good luck with your endeavor!

It's an insanely amazing idea. Especially for those who so desperately want to have a child and can't. I would pay someone to have a baby for me if I wanted another one and couldn't adopt for some reason. I couldn't go through pregnancy again. Everyone is different.

I think it's great! I've though about doing it as well because I LOVE being pregnant and my heart goes out to ppl who cant have children. Although I emotionaly would not be able to give the baby up. If you really believe you can handle it and are healthy and up for it...go for it! Do more research.

I honestly think it's great! And wish I could do it for some people I care about who can't have babies. But in today's society it would just be too weird for me with already having kids of my own and everything.

I don't have any experience with it personally, but I think surrogates are very strong women. It's great that you want to help another couple have a child. =)

i think it takes a strong hearted person to do this and they should be well paid. just be sure 100% that you are willing to give up a child you carried for 9 months, i know that it is a rare blessing for couples who cannot have children, and it is something to be be commended if you can handle the emotional aspect of it!!!!!!!!

I want to do that when I get older too. I would love to see the look on their faces when they finally have their baby.
