I would recommend going with dell (inpiron 1520 series) or the hp (dv6xxxx series) notebooks. I recommend these models in particular because it's almost certain that you can find online coupons that can hack off as much as 20 percent. The following site shows coupons for hp, http://www.xpbargains.com/st_deals.php/h... If you google dell or hp coupons, you can usually find them.
If you can't find any coupons for either, you can also try dell vostro for a pretty good deal, the base price is, the starting base price is $599 for 1400 series. These are actually cheaper than similarly configured inspiron model, only without the coupon though, if you can find a coupon the inspirons are usually cheaper.
Also you might want to considering going with an AMD processor. Although the intel processors offer better performance, the AMD processor are still solid and plenty powerful. It's also cheaper, usually up to a few hundred dollars cheaper for similarly configured notebooks.
If you can't find coupons, both dell and hp offer student discounts, anywhere from 5-10%, it depends on what university you go to. They usually have a student section on their site, if you can't find it just call and ask.
Just so you know you can't use both the student discount and online coupon its usually one or the other. If you can find the online coupon, go with the coupon it usually gives you a better deal.
Hope this helps.

Well, with a little over 1000, you can get the fantasticly sleek, light, and thin Mac Book in White, which has a 2.0 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 80 GB Hard Drive, and 1 GB of memory. It comes with an Airport card, which detects all WiFi networks in range, and can offer to join open networks as they come into ange as well. Also, if you're a college student, you'll get an iPod Nano free, which you can sell, give as a gift, or just keep. If you teach or are a student, there's a 10% discount and there is always an $100 rebate on printers when ( or if ) you decide to buy it. I've always found them reliable, intuitive, easy to tansport, and just... cool. If you don't want to leave your Microsoft OS behind, you can always buy a copy of Vista and have it on the Laptop, too. Applications on the Mac OS come ready to use, which I expirienced firsthand when I bought my new laptop, a MacBookPro, last month. You can always ubgrade the Mac Book to have 2 GB of Memory and up to 200 GB of Hard Drive Space. It automatically checks for software updates and asks for your comfirmation before downloading. Good luck looking for a laptop!

I have a Dell Inspiron E1405 Laptop, I would suggest a laptop because you will be able to take it with you, if you are in college you will be able to use it during your free time after classes and be able to use it during class to take notes or if you like me, search the internet.
Also, PLEASE don't purchase a computer from Wal-Mart I work there, and I wouldn't even purchase one from them. They sell Dell, Compaq, HP, Toshiba, E-Machines, and I believe one more, if you want one of these computers, Im sure you would get a better deal directly from the company that makes them.

Shop around! You don't want to buy a laptop because somebody else thinks it's cool.
My wife has an HP laptop that she never turns off, it keeps running and running.
