I've heard some people say that it died with Tupac. My husband says, "No, it didn't die. But it's been taking a series of long naps since then." I'm a huge fan of hip hop; so I say that it isn't what it use to be, but I still love it. As for what happened to it- Well, to be honest, I think it has to do with that old money train called big white business. It collects an awful lot of money from promoting the stereotype that black people are just a bunch of "thugs", "playas", and "hoochies". And most of the entertainers are either too blind to see it or too heavily influenced by their own greed to give a damn.

Yeaaahhh! That's what I'm talking about.....I often find myself listening to the old school Hip-Hop, simply because the new stuff isn't even worth listening to. Although there are about a handful of artists that are hot right now, but the majority of it is garbage....

Hip Hop has been subjected to oppresion just as black people have.
The best rap does pay, only the most commercial rap. You are forced to like 50 cent. He has talent but if you dont shoot guns, deal dope, or see women as second class, you cant really identify with what he says. Yet it is this very music playing on MTV in asia, australia, africa and europe.
Rap cant survive unless the songs touch people that deal with love, pain, work, hate, discrimination, and thing that the great majority of people that live straight lives can feel.
Songs about dreaming, hope, overcoming adversity, love of family, chilling with friends, have given way to violence and pure sex.
As a former teenager during the golden years of rap '86-'94, rap has turned its back on me. I have bought 3 rap cds in the last what 5/6 years.

I didn't watch the video, yet I wonder the same thing as to what happened to hiphop. Obviously, it's sad where it's going, considering the fact that this type of rap is still on the air because of the people who buy the CD's and request the songs. Furthermore, It bothers me that we don't even get a variety of different sounds and types of hiphop. There are so many out there, yet we only get the sugercoated, commercialized fake sounding hiphop. With gimmicks who I can't even keep track of anymore, spittin out unintelligent, ignorant and stupid lyrics. What happened to hiphop?

It lost touch with what made it popular to start with. It's hard to relate to any entertainers nowadays. Lyrics are more wordplay then having a poetic significance. And bling bling this and take your broke *** home that. It's starting to sound more and more like drunken rantings than music. Do you think I really want to buy that for 12 bucks?

Hip-Hop is alive and well if you're a true hip-hop head.
And to the guy "this is what my daddy" (or what ever) hip-hop started in the SOUTH BRONX! Don't get it twisted homie!
Oh and I LOVE the "Respiration" reference.
