Start? there are always fires; this year there were fires even in February due to the lack of rain.
But of course, the majority burst out in the period June-August, due to "extremely hot and dry weather conditions, combined with strong winds".
Until the 16/8 (meaning BEFORE the fires YOU know, on the 24/8) there had been about 8.600 fires. Hectares burnt until the end of August: 268.834 = 2.688.340 stremmata (to fully grasp this number we should remember than in 2006 -12 months- we had 8.874 fires which burned 17.822 ha = 178.220 stremmata. And in 2000 14.021 fires burned "only" 154.177 hectares = 1.541.770 stremmata).
And of course there are still fires going on, like every year - the very substantial difference this year is that in addition to forests and crops, livestock and houses were burnt and - most important - 76 people died this summer, either trying to escape the fire or trying to control it (10 of them died during the "first" fires, in June - July).

Somerlo is right. We are members of the same Environmental society and we get reports every day about this slaughter of animals and birds.
Ours and other collaborating organizations are trying to motivate common opinion and the idiotic State of ours to essentially protect what has fire left untouched, but with no success for the time being.
As for the forests, our experience of the past 20 years is that once burnt, they never recover because of the equal responsability of the citizens and the State. Hymittos and Pendeli are the best examples...

Right. Begining of June, and there are still fires burning forests, mainly because of arsons.
The saddest part of this issue is that almost nobody talks about the hundrends of thousands of domestic animals burnt alive, and the millions of wild animals burnt in the forests.
The ones that managed to escape get massacred by the greek hunters, while the "competent" authorities either demostrate their indeference, or tollerate them.
And the media talk only about burnt houses, never mentioning the damage that environment has suffered....

Most are extinguished. As to when they started, there is no exact date, because there have been fires here and there starting wihin a period of many days, around the end of August.
