I used to work for Wells Fargo. I quit after 4 months because I saw how they consistently stole money from their customers.
I bank with Washington Mutual. They are all over Los Angeles, California an the country. If you keep your account in good standing, you won't incur any fees by them (you will from the other bank if you use their ATM). Their online support is awesome, though it looks like they are outsourcing customer service to the Philippines.
Overall, I am very happy with my checking (WAMU Checking), Savings (Silver Savings) and credit card (basic) with them.

Checking: www.EverBank.com (3.41% on checking)
Savings: www.GMACBank.com (5.30% on savings)
Both are FDIC insured. Highly rated. Give ATM fee rebates (up to $6 amonth).
My wife and I love them both. Great service (esp. EverBank).
With EverBank I can make deposits in many local banks via the ATM sysytem (no charge).

For a savings account, you should look into ING Orange. They offer somewhere around 4% for interest. That is a sweet deal...
