Is it possible that the router is set to use WPA encryption, and your laptop only does WEP? If that is the case, see if there is a bios update for your laptop, or an improved wireless driver. If you can't make your laptop understand WPA, you'll have to change the router to do WEP, which is not as secure, but is probably good enough for most things.

Check that your wireless card is switched on. They normally have a tiny slide switch on one side.
