For both, you are laid on a bed. This bed goes into a big tube-like structure. It makes some noise, and you come out and get a lollypop (hopefully. :]) Don't sweat it.
If you're claustrophobic, do a couple of breathing exercises beforehand. Tell the nurses, and they'll do all they can to help you through.
Make sure to lay VERY still. I don't mean to make you nervous, but those tests are expensive. I would hate for you to have to do them again.
Good luck! :D

Both are done in a tube like machine. In both you lie flat and still. Sometimes there are injections of iodine(CT) or gadolinium(MRI); depends on your medical history and diagnosis. CT scans about 30 minutes, MRI 30 min to 1hr depending whether its "closed" or "open", "Closed" is about 30 min and "Open" is 30 min to 1 hr. If claustophobic, Open MRI is the better option, but your dr may want different. Its sometimes quicker if the person(pt) isn't moving. The Mri makes a clicking sound or you may hear "a chirping bird" sound. They are very expensive probably between $1500 to $3000 each. Make sure your insurance is precertified/approved with your insurance company before it is done. The Dr ordering your CT and MRI usually handle this for you. Check with them first. If not you can probably handle it yourself and call your insurance and get it done but its easier if the Dr's office does it for you. Just FYI most insurance companies require precertification for these exams before its done, and they usually require 3 days notice in advance. If its not precertified and it requires precertification its best not to do it until its approved unless your ins doesn't require it. Tell the CT or MRI tech if you have ANY allergies to ANYTHING.

good luck
nothign to worry about.. a MRI is a long tube..and you get onto a gurney as i call it.. and they slide this into the machine..it seems like a tight fit... anyway..if your clastrophobic.. try and think of things other than being in atube!! you will have earplugs..and music..yes even music!!
you will still hear the loudest and weirdest sounds comming from the MRI machine..but thats no worry.. its common an normal.. then you may even see the lights of green and white..i did..sometimes it seemed like i was in acoffin ..but there was a mirror above my head and i could see the open end and look to see the other open end.... its ok..and will be done sooner than you think
i had to have the mri for 3 hours last april and 1 hour 45 mins the year before...
the cat scan i cant talk about..never had one but i think its about the same...what helped me was i counted the beeps and counted inbetween the noises.... good luck and i know youll be just fine..heres a hug for ya!

I had all that stuff done about five years ago...I forget which is which, but all is totally painless. I think one of them is where they lay you on a table and shove you into a machine which takes electronic images all over your body. Absolutely nothing to be scared of though. I had a broken leg, surgery, and a blood clot because of the surgery.

it is much like taking an xray only they use different machines and you have to hold very still. There is no pain involved so just relax and do what they tell you to do.
