Johnson spent his entire political time during the Civil War, whether as a senator or as vice president, proving that he was a loyal northerner despite being from Tennesee, a southern state. Many historians feel that he worked overtime to overcome that stigma in the eyes of the Republicans as well as other fellow politicians by being as harsh on the south as he could be during Reconstruction. It is commonly known that Lincoln planned a more gentle approach to bringing the union back together, so Johnson sparred constantly with the republicans as well as congress and the senate in general, bringing on impeachment proceedings eventually.

The republicans wanted to treat the south as a conquered possession. We had just fought the bloodiest war in our history to prove the south was and always would be an indisputable part of the USA and they(the GOP) were trying to undo all that had been sacrificed for.

The Radical Republicans ended the civil rights flourishing years of Reconstruction and post Civil War 1870s with a greedy political pact with the racist Southern Democrats. In turn the Republicans won the presidency and the Southern Democrats were given autonomy over the South thus ending Reconstruction and setting African Americans back until the 1960s with Jim Crow and segregation.
From 1877 to 1965 Southern Democrats ruled with an iron fist and imposed strict racial codes and laws in order to put freed African Americans "in their place". While the Radical Republicans who traded off years of progressive acts for a presidency of Grant that is easily forgotten were slowly replaced Republicans who were indifferent with civil rights and could care less. That span of Republican domination in the presidency starting with Grant to Arthur is an era of inept and forgotten presidents all of which stayed clear of the problems in the South. Originally African Americans during Reconstruction became the 2nd largest voting block in the South. And in many congressional districts blacks were the majority.
Johnson believed the spending on Reconstruction in the South was a sap on money and causing hardship for whites while blacks "lavished in wealth". Also Northern sentiment grew tired of the problems of the South and wanted to move on both economically and politically. However the political pact that allow Southern Democrat domination of the South and thus putting blacks in a situation no better than slavery.
Did you that during Reconstruction African Americans held more elective offices in the South and anywhere in the USA during the years of 1865 and 1877 than today.
Today many African Americans support the Democrats but in reality it was the Democrats who treated as 2nd class citizens since Thomas Jefferson administration to the Lydon B Johnson administration. So why support the Democrats when for 300 years they supported slavery and even fought a war for it and then enforce unjust laws against blacks?
Republicans are really the lesser of two evils. They after Lincoln's death championed equal rights of African Americans. Althought the Republicans put blacks into years of racist oppression from 1877 to 1965 in the South for a presidency given to Grant who was the most inept president in America.
But unless your willing to forgive and forget. African Americans really shouldn't identify with neither political party. None of which has supported blacks until JFK & RFK made it popular and so on into the present.
