A common noun would be Girl a proper noun would be Sarah.they don't mean the same because girl can mean any girl while Sarah means Sarah. Girl also could mean a new person in the convo.

Proper nouns are the names of things. Johnny, California, America are proper nouns. Boy, state, country are common nouns because they can apply to more than one of the same kind of thing. (Yes, I know that there may be more than one boy called Johnny but it still refers to a specific person.)

Anything that is capitalized in a proper noun so countries are proper nouns words like bed and table are common nouns.
