I'm a college professor. I firmly believe in the value of a liberal arts education. There are very few subjects that I think aren't worth much.

I certainly think an English degree is worth while. What employer wouldn't want an employee who can think critically and express himself coherently.

On the other hand -- Sociology is one of the few subjects that I do not value highly. The subject matter may have some worth -- but I find that the weakest college students major in sociology.

Being an English major opens doors for you have command of communication and the written word. Sociology adds the human dimension of understanding people. These are two critical pieces to success. Don't worry about stereotyping of majors and minors if people scoff at you. Everybody has an opinion, and you know what can be said about opinions... What matters is that you find happiness in what you study.

Careers depend on what you are interested in as a vocation. If you are a classicist, there are support positions in colleges and universities that allow you to showcase your knowledge. In business settings, look toward media arts such as advertising, copy editing and training.

As you concentrate on your degree plan, network with people of similar volition who can share their thoughts and experiences.

Best to you.

You can go on to a graduate English program or Sociology program, then teach it.
You can also get a job in journalism.

Very little.

You can add on a teaching degree and be a teacher.

You may be able to find work as an editor or writer, but those jobs are low-paying and few, generally.
