New Orleans would not be a big city.
Mississippi would not have been such a big center for slavery (cotton production was made off of rivers fed into the MS; without drainage, they're just salty lakes).
The Oregon Trail would not have been such a big deal, since the pioneers could just sail down river.

I hope this isn't some sort of riddle...

The answer is obvious.

The Missippi River starts in Minnesota. There are three river systems that start in Minnesota. The Red River of the North flows north to Hudson Bay. That doesn't help you.

But the other river system that starts in Minnesota flows into Lake Superios and then eastward through the St Lawrence Seaway. So -- id the Missippi River flowed East, it would go into the Great Lakes system.

If it went West, it would hit the Rockies and change direction.

It would cross the United States and probable be from coast to coast. It may result into pouring into the Pacific on the east and Atlantic on the south. The Mississippi is a long river, and may be the width of our America. (How was that???) :)

The mississippi river is a cause, not an effect. You should ask what pre-existing conditions would be necessary for that to be a result...because flowing water will always seek the path of least resistance. This is my third sentence.

I'm smart enough not to fall for that ruse.
