Possibly against health code, very likely a violation of your lease, and definitely grounds for eviction if it is either. Unless you let them smell, there usually isn't a problem with guinea pigs, especially since nobody sees them unless they come in, but cats are another thing. Most apartments don't allow even one cat or dog because of the number of past renters that have left pet-related damage.

If your lease prohibits pets they can evict you for keeping any pets even temporarily. If your lease is silent on the issue of pets, your LL cannot evict you.
If the number you have is against the health code, the Health Department can force you to get rid of any that are in excess of what the law allows.

they haver every right to evict you. In most states the rules for apartments are no pets. Except a senior citizen over 65 is allowed one small pet. As a past property manager I can just say I wonder what your apartment smells like. Someone will have to clean it after you move out

Even if it isn't illegal, it may be against the apartment's policy. Either way, you don't have any right to have animals unless the manager or owner gives you permission.

It depends on the lease agreement you signed with them. If it specifically states "No animals allowed", then that's just what it is/

As far as I know, all leases (and your apartment is on a lease) states no animals, making it illegal, even to have a hamster
