Never thought of that. Very true and interesting.

Same situation as this:
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia
which is the fear of long words.

Because ease comes after hardship.. Hence the long word brought about the ease of shortened words..

Well, may because it the developed form of the latin word "short"- brevis.

In fact, the word itself is abbreviated quite often ;)
ABBR, ABBV, Abbrev, Abbrn, and ABB
