Yup it will hurt it.. You may not see it but you will damage it and those little scratches down the road will turn into rust spots.

We used to use steel wool to remove rust from steel wheels. But turtle wax chrome polish and a rag works better. And protect that freshly polished chrome with car paste wax.

Steel wool doesn't sound like a good idea on any part of a car...
Suggestion: Look for Scotch-Brite No Scratch sponge things. (Generally for dishes.) They have a rough scrubby side and a sponge side, I used one on my car with no issues.

A fresh soapy "sos" (not brillo) works well,I've been using them for years.Try it in an inconspicous area to see if you get the results you want,don't scrub to hard.See for yourself and be your own judge.

YES__God don't do it--use the chrome cleaners and polish with care and they should come up real nice.
