Modem & Router

Modem use to translate phone line to Digital Data for Computer, normaly if you use Dialup or ADSL connection you need Modem.

Router is a device use to share internet to many user clients, however you need to have internet connection for router to share.

Most of ADSL Modem today come with router built-in.

IP & Network.

If you use Modem to connect to Internet your ISP (Internet Services Provider) automaticly provide you an IP Address.

To Connect Local Network you need to assign an IP Address for each machine and both IP must be in the same Class normaly i use
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2

However you can use DHCP which is you don't have to worry about assigning IP at all.

A modem acts like a phone allowing your computer to connect to other places around the world.

A router on the other hand is a device for connecting more computers to the same modem. Thus, allowing them to share the same modem which gives you internet sharing on many computers.

A Hub is a little bit less complicated. A hub will allow two computers to correspond with each other, sort of like a two way radio. However a hub will just ignore a modem.

For your case, a router may suffice. Setting your computers to use DHCP, and they should automatically detect each other. Just make sure the WORKGROUP name is the same on all computers

Modem (Modulator Demodulator) is a device that enables communications between PCs, negotiating transfer speeds and the such. A router, as the name implies it, routes traffic, sending data to the correct place.

There are many ways to do what you are trying to do. Here are three of them:

1) Use a Crossover Cable (looks like a regular CAT5, but the pinout in one head is reversed).
2) Dial in from one computer to the other one, requiring a modem in both of them.
3) Just connect them to a router and have them connect.

Depending on what you want to do, is the choice you have to make. For example, if you were to transfer a file, then the crossover cable would be the easiest way to go. If you were to do filesharing, the router is the way to go, and if you were to access a serial console, the modem would be the way to go.

Hope this helps.

The modem connects to the Internet. The router connects several computers to the Internet, through the same modem.

modems are used for dial-up networking

routers are used for connecting LANs together in a reliable manner.

routers provide a constant connection and are normally faster than a modem connection

hope this helped
