We have a subzero side by side fridge and it has always been hard to open up the fridge door. We called the company and they suggested that we try to have someone come and demagnetize the door. Does anyone have any information about this or any suggestions on what to do to fix this? I don't know if it's just that the door is really heavy or the suction is the problem. Please help!!!

Sounds like the company personel that talked to you, isn't very educated, there is no way on gods green earth that your fridge door is magnetized to the point that it is making it hard to open your door, chances are you have a good gasket seal liek previously said, take it from me there are no magnets in this gasket and it would take a magent producing hundreds of thousands of Henries to make yoru door magnetized powerfully enough to make it difficult to open (this kind of magnet would be equal to that of a wrecking yard magnet or larger.

It's unusual to have a problem with magnetic strips on fridge or freezer doors, the problem as previously suggested could be suction, this is caused by leaving the door open more than is absolutely necessary and warm air gets inside, when the door is closed the warm air cools and causes a partial vacuum making the door hard to open, this will also make the fridge work harder to bring the temperature down and increase the running costs. So only open the door long enough to remove what you need and close it immediately.

I don't believe them. Usually when the door is hard to open it means you have some sticky crud that is on the door frame and the gasket. A good cleaning would help there. There could also be a hinge misalignment.

The very last thing on my list of reasons would be a need to demagnetize anything.

the magnets on the gaskets are necessary in order to pull the gasket flush to make it air tight.
i have the same issue but it is harder to open during the first minute of closing the door because of the suction. after a couple of minutes it is not as bad.
this is just the function of the freezer so you're not loosing your "cool" ing

I have replace maybe 1500 to 2000 door gaskets in my 25 years of doing refrigeration. have never seen one that did not have magnets in it.my 800.00 Maytag has magnets in gaskets why shouldn't a 4000.00 subzero. Oh yea they also have frame heaters on freezer side.just clean the gaskets so there not sticky.

Are you sure you're not going to paly some cruel joke on unexpecting passer byers. "Oh, here is a cute picyure of my 10 kids, I think I'll put it on your fridge." Sllllllide down.. They try it agian. Picture.. sllllide down... "Hmm.. something must be wrong.
Tee hee heee
By the way, you can't see my fridge anymore, it is covered with pictures of about a million kids.
Good luck anyway...
