"The mechanic told Bill and me that the car was not finished."

The reason is simple enough... Take Bill out of the sentence. Which sounds better?

"The mechanic told I that the car was not finished."
or
"The mechanic told me that the car was not finished."

I hope this is clear enough.

Bill and me
Break it down

The mechanic told Bill the car was not ready
The mechanic told me the car was not ready.

Now try I, (makes no sense)
The mechanic told I the car was not ready.....NO
