I hear at least one a day. Not a profession for the faint of heart.

Sexual mutilation.
Being sold into slavery.
Being sexually abused.
Being physically abused.
Being tortured and maimed.
Being made to kill and carry a weapon before the 12th birthday.
Starving and dying before the age of 5.
Death is soon coming because one cannot afford a life saving drug.
Being infected with HIV by someone who is depressed and suicidal anyway.

There are lots of them, but one that always haunts me is the case of Lisa Steinberg and her adoptive "parents" Joel Steinberg and Hetta Nussbaum. The woman who gave Lisa up for adoption was devastated when she heard about the abuse and murder of that child.

The other case that will always stay in my head is the boy who was taken from his parents when he was 3, kept as a sex slave until he was a teenager, and the only way he was found was when he tried to save another boy that was taken by the abductor. Once "Stephen" was free, he married and had a child. Within a year, he was hit by a car and killed. That kid had approximately 2-3 years of happiness before he was killed by a drunk driver who's never been identified. Cases like that make me wonder why some people are put on earth to begin with.

The real ones are always the cancer ones. One "clever", moving line was when a family member went in hospital for serious cancer treatment, and was asked what their religion was, and replied "my spouse," and held the spouse's hand.
Very moving.
