My car has been acting like it wants to die, usually just when I start it or have to accelerate really fast, but the last few days when I start it and back out of my parking spot it sounds almost as if the engine is knocking, but only untill I get going, today, after it did this, it smelled like something was burning but it didn't smell like gas or oil, then about ten miles down the road my check engine light came on, any ideas what it might be?

My car has been acting like it wants to die when I first start it, sometimes it does die about 30 - 60 seconds after I start it, the last couple days when I start it it sounds as if the engine is knocking, but only untill I get going on the road. When I try to accelerate, it acts like it doesn't want to go then 20-30 seconds later, it shoots off and revs up after I've let up on the gas. My oil was just changed and filled, water level is full and fuel filter has recently been changed. Today, the car knocked when I started it, then acted like it wasn't getting any gas and didn't want to go, then I started smelling something like something was burning, but it didn't smell like gas or oil and a few miles down the road my check engine light came on. Any ideas?

That check engine light is indicating a problem with any one of a hundreds sensors--so get to a shop and let them fix it up--do a complete job and be done with it. A little extra money but you save in the long run--YOU don't have the tools or the know how or the facilities to work on your own car. In a day or two you will be all fixed up and ready to go--so do it and do it soon--before you have to pay for a tow truck---MORE money wasted. Good luck

Really it could be a number of things. Check the easy things first like your coolant level or your oil. If it dies when you make a stop, like at a stop sign, it could be a vacuum problem. I'm sorry if any of this is over your head but you can ask any of you dude friends that are at least half *** knowledgable about cars, they could help you out. Personally if I could take a look at it, I could figure it out. Without actually seeing whats doin myself, it's kinda hard to pinpoint a problem. If the smell smells like syrup, you have a coolant problem. Always start with the easiest or the cheapest. I apologize thats all that I can help. But that'll give you a better idea of whats goin on.

gas stress regulator. There could be a attempt for this interior the restoration instruction manual. grimy injectors (which fail to seat) is the different problem. the different issues that spring to techniques on issues like this produce a lean burn. If the engine has been working wealthy for an prolonged time it must be that the cat is plugged. Now undergo in techniques that it takes a whilst some cases for the ECM to reset while maintenance are finished. i'm unsure some blocks will do the trick.

have you checked your oil level. The engine probably ran low on oil, either by an oil leak or not putting enough oil in it. The knocking was not enough lubrication in the bottom end. I'd say the engine is shot.

where do we start.
check your oil. Even if you had it done recently. Those quick change places will sometimes not tighten the filter completely because its hard to get off next time if they do. Could be almost anything.

Good luck to you.

It have to be the EGR valve it's going out. you can go to autozone and tell them your check engine light is on and they will run a computer to it. they will do it for free.

You didn't say how old your car was, so it is hard to diagnose. However it might be a dirty fuel filter.
