I have had a canadian drivers licence for 5 years which just expired 2 weeks back, and i am travelling to dubai on a visit for 2 months. I do have an international driver's license which is valid for another 8 months. Can i use that to drive in dubai? If i can, is it only rented cars, or can I drive my parent's car while i am there?

Intl driving license can be used to drive any car, not just cars that are rented. The purpose of the license is to ensure the person can actually drive, so it really does not matter which car, as long as he/she can drive.

The only restriction is that u cant drive trucks or motor bikes etc, stick to regular cars and you are on the safe side.

Canadian license is only valid in Canada, the authorities will not need to see it, as far as they are concerned you can drive if you have a local license or an international one of you are not a resident and in Dubai on a temp basis.

The correct term is International Driving Permit (IDP) rather than International Driving License. If you have one and want to drive in Dubai, then you can but you'll need to rent a car or go to a police station to get a temporary driving licence for Dubai (if you want to drive a private car).

A temporary driving license is issued if you want to drive a private car in Dubai but don't have a residency visa to be able to obtain a full UAE driving license eg visitors on visit visas. You obtain it from a traffic police station (there's one next to Mall of the Emirates in Al Barsha) and it's valid for six months. Bring:
Your home country passport, driving license and copies - your licence and passport are supposed to be from the same country.
Copy of whatever visa you have for the UAE (or passport if it's stamped, or e-gate card if not)
International Driving Permit from the same country as your licence. As of early 2007 this appears to be more necessary than previously but you never know if/when rules or interpretations of them change.
Note that if you want to drive a rental car in Dubai, you don't need to apply for a temporary licence but you do need to bring an IDP - International Driving Permit (required as of January 2007) and your home country driving licence (from same country as your passport).

To make a long story short: have your expired drivers license renewed and you'll be good.

Take care and have a good time.

each and every of the DMV could ought to do is placed as much as the international Drivers License usa of beginning place, and say that the motive force had committed against the regulation and did no longer ensue to court. the two way, the record will persist with the license interior the U. S. and if he ever gets pulled throughout lower back he would be arrested for using with a revoked license. the vehicle may be impounded on the time besides. He ought to attempt to get yet another court date. flow to the county clerk / court that he lives close to and function him ask for yet another court date. supply a official excuse like intense flu or pink eye or something like that. something that he would possibly no longer choose a medical doctors be conscious for. If he's fortunate they'll purely reschedule it. If he's no longer, then they'll tag on extra fines. Hiding and ignoring the incontrovertible fact that he committed against the regulation does not abolish him from committing the crime. except he's a diplomat, he's going to ought to cope with it to get it off his record. Stuff like this would end you from being employed to a job. and prefer the guy above me reported, it could carry approximately a warrant for his arrest. no longer that law enforcement officials will bust down his doorways. yet while he ever encounters regulation enforcement and that they do a background verify, regardless of if he's no longer using, they'll arrest him instantaneous. (i'm guessing it replaced right into a official enable, because of the fact the officer probable could have noted that it replaced into faux while he checked it out)

I dont think so. If you look into your international driving license book, you will see that UAE is not included in the list of country. I made the international license in my country before I came to dubai, and it is not applicable here in Dubai. BUt maybe yours is different. Check first with the book that came with your license.
