Hello,
I have been in law school for the last month and I hate it. I just don't care for the subject material. I do my case briefing and do alright when called on but I just don't have a passion for it. It bores me to death. I know I just started and everyone says "give it time" but I don't know if interest is going to pop out of thin air for me as time passes. And is it worth sticking around when you know that you don't enjoy it? For lack of any other choice I went to law school. I really feel like this is something I don't want to do and am not happy in. I've been doing the required reading and briefing because of obligation and pressure not because I really like it. I don't want to waste time or money now just for the sake pleasing my parents. I don't know what to do. I feel stuck. I would appreciate some thoughts, wisdom and any advice. Thank you very much.

The first year of law school is about as bad as it gets. Your subjects, professors, and even classmates are picked for you. If your school is like most, you're traveling all day with a group of 30-75 people from class to class, and it feels like you might as well just live with them all. The workload is horrendous, there's the pressure from cold calling, the material bores you to tears . . . sound about right?

It may be that you just genuinely hate law school, or that you chose the wrong school. Or you could just be feeling like all but the most delusional 1Ls. However, if you're still feeling like that in your 2nd year, then it's time to seriously reconsider . . . except that by then, you might as well just finish.

Law school really isn't the most enjoyable academic experience, but it's worthwhile. Treat it like bootcamp--no fun, but it'll get you where you need to go.

I also didn't like the academic part of law school last year, although I recognized in the abstract that I was going to a great school, etc. However, once I got a chance to see how things were applied over the summer (I did public interest), I started to appreciate what I was learning a little more. I'm now enjoying my classes more, and not feeling quite so claustrophobic from being in a 1L section.

Ultimately, it's your decision, but I'm glad I stuck it out.

Your career is something you must have love and passion for and should not be a duty or just to please your parents. I'm sure your parents is happy to know you are in law school now, which is quite a achievement itself since you made it this far. But since YOU are not happy with your career choice I'd say leave, especially if you feel in your heart you are wasting money, time and possible years in something you only feel obligation towards and may later regret ever doing.

If you decide to leave law school, it might be pretty hard to tell your parents but at the end, you must make your own decision and the right choices that best for you, not everyone else. Choose a career that is satisfying, not only financially but emotional fulfilling-a vocation that serves a purpose in your life and look forward to keeping for many years to come. And more importantly, you should have a interest in your occupation to begin with. Perhaps there is a hobby you truly enjoy and can possibly turn it into a profession?

Whenever you do find something that fits, you will definitely feel the drive and the determination into obtaining your goal. And hopefully your folks will be happy simply because you are. And that is where your real career happiness lies.

Good luck!

The first year of law school is by far the most difficult. I would give it at least the rest of the semester, and THEN make a decision about whther or not you want to stay. As far as your parents....why do they want you to pursue a law degree in particular? Because of the money? Prestige? Remember, law degrees are a dime a dozen. Law schools in general have become very easy to get into, and there are tons of them out there. As a result, there are tons of lawyers, and you won't make as much money in law as you could have years and years ago. The point is, there are many other respectable degrees you could pursue to gain money and prestige. You could obtain Masters or Doctoral degrees in fields such as Psychology, Nursing, Business, Public Health.
Good Luck

You are not the first person this has happened to, and I doubt you will be the last. This happened to my granddaughter, who said from the fifth grade on she wanted to be a lawyer. She changed courses. No education is wasted, Follow your bliss
and that is what you will excell in, Once you have that freedom you may change your mind, that has happened too.
It is your life only you can live it. Hopefully who ever you don't want to disapoint will understand that. Blessings
