Go to a good music store and get a resin (pronounced RAH'-zin) for the bow. You slide it on and it becomes a bit white and powdery. It helps the bow glide across the strings.
At the same music store, buy a tuner, but get help from the staff-they can show you how to use it. I'm not sure if they make them for violins, I'm sure they do, but they do make them for guitars, and you might be able to adapt it. They can show you how to tune the strings using the tuner. Or you tune one string and then tune the rest of the violin to that one string. Your music teacher will show you how to do that.
Have fun learning! I used to play the viola (I rented mine too) and I loved it. It's neat to learn to read music and then make it come to life.

u need something called rosin for your bow. it makes the little hairs on the strings stand up so more sound comes out. also get a wiping cloth cuz rosin dust will fall out and make your fiddle look dusty. to tune, play 2 neighboring strings at the same time. if u dont hear a "wa-wa-wa" that means its in tune. the faster the noise is, the more ur out of tune. since ur only a beginner, use the silver pegs at the bottom of the violin. the black pegs at the top are for more experienced players. and tell the guys at the store ro put tape on the neck for u to know where to put your fingers

The place that you got the violin should show you how to tune it.
Are you taking lessons?
Are you doing this in school?
My son started in 1st. grade and now is in 5th and the teacher showed him how to tune his violin.
You need rosin for the bow. A must.
Clean soft cloth.
Keep in case when not in use.
Just ask your dealer that you rented from to help you tune your violin. There are special gadgets that can help you tune it properly.
Good luck!

The entire link is too long, but when you get there, click on violin at the bottom of the page, and it'll tell you all you need to know, including the piano key A, which is what you use. Also you'll need rosin for your violin bow.

You need lessons. To try to "go it alone" is like trying to climb Mt Everest alone. There is SO much to know about music, scales, sightreading, your instrument, how to practice, ear training, etc. Its a lifetime of exploration but you need a good teacher to help you, especially as a beginner!
