For instance,

The average temperature this week was 14 deg.

The the temps were -1, 10, -4, 16, 29, 33.

How would I find the missing day? I tried adding the six temps and X and made them equal to 14. Is this correct? If so mine didn't turn out so pretty.

(-1 + 10 + -4 + 16 + 29 + 33 + x) / 7 = 14
multiply by 7
83 + x = 98
x = 15 degrees

You have to remember to put in the 7th temperature, even though you do not yet know it.

A general equation would be this:

(a + b + c + d + e + f + g)/n = x.
Where a to g are the temperatures on each day; n is the number of temperatures; x is the average temperature from those given.

Your formula would be this:

(-1 + 10 + -4 + 16 + 29 + 33 + g)/7 = 14.

(83 + g)/7 = 14
Simplify the equation by multiplying it all by 7:
83 + g = 98
Get g by itself, by subtracting 83 from both sides:
g = 15.

Therefore, your final temperature is 15 degrees.

average is add all the items together and divide by the number of items

so 14 =( -1 +10 -4 +16 +29 +33 +x ) /7
14 * 7 = 83 + x
98 -83 =x
15 = x

multiply the average by the number of figures to get the total.
Add the total of the numbers you have, and what you're short is the missing value.
Don't forget that you're missing one value, so there's really seven, not six!
14*7 = 98. (not 14*6 = 84)
The sum of the values you have is 83, so you're short 15.

You forgot to divide the sum by 7. Then set it equal to 14. So the sum would equal 7(14).
