California has strict laws when it comes to animals, dead or alive. Check with the state's Secretary of State or the California Department of Environmental Protection. You can probably do that on line.

Cremation is always an option. There are some pet burial grounds as well. Plus, there is a company called 'fur zombies', or something like that, that you can send the carcass in, and they'll stuff it like a plushy and send it back for a fee. It depends on what you think is morally right, and what's within your budget. If getting a cremation, take the carcass to the vet. If looking for pet cemetaries, most vets will have the directions to the nearest one as well.

Backyard burial isn't legal, but it's not an enforceable offense. I buried a baby bird in the backyard before. They become part of soil and nature again.

Who's going to know? It's your yard. It's no one else's business if you bury a departed pet in it. I certainly would if it were my yard and my pet.

No, it is not legal in California. IF you are seen doing it you can be turned in and fined and you would have to remove your pet.
