This means you have insert selected. For some reason there is no way of knowing whether it is on or not (no little light comes on) on keyboards. To get rid of this, just press the insert key, which is located in the group of 6 keys above the arrow keys.

It sounds like you have the Insert button toggled off. It's located above "Delete" and next to "Home" in that group of 6 buttons above the arrow keys. Press it once, then try again.
