Yes, there HAVE been refinements to make your time more Hedonistic, your lives more leisurely, such as this computer, Plasma TV, MP-3s, fast Japanese motorcycles, "safer" autos; the list is seemingly endless.

Yet, I can & do recall a time when life WAS much more pleasurable, simpler, even safer. When there was much LESS Murder, Rapine, and Rampage; there were LESS frivolous "Laws", LESS Police, LESS burglar alarms. A time when the worst "Terrorist" event was a deluded Cuban hi-jacking a plane "home" to Cuba! A time where there was much more emphasis on "service"; a person could buy a gallon of gas & still get their tires & oil checked, & windshield cleaned. A time when "411" calls were FREE & Operators were friendly, helpful, & HUMAN. A time when one could STILL be proud of their President, when most people were still unfamiliar with the words "Incompetent" & "Buffoon".

MY QUESTION STANDS: Are we all now just simple-mindless SHEEPLE distracted by Technology?

How far back are you remembering?

Life may have seemed more pleasurable and simpler just because you were younger. Change is disconcerting, and getting old isn't fun.

Firvolous laws have been around for a long time - I doubt very much that you are old enough to remember a time without them.

Crime has been down significantly the last couple of decades, even if it is still sensationally reported.

Yes, Terrorism has gotten 'worse' in the sense that attacks have become more spectacular and deadly of late.

And, yes, it is ironic that there's a lot less 'service' in today's service economy, but it is just an economic shift - people insist on better wages, benefits and working conditions than they used to, so you can't overstaff a gas station to provide cheap 'full service' anymore. Same goes for opperators. Same goes for a lot of things.

The office of the President has been tarnished. I'll give you that. It started when the media discovered they could bring down a President over a relatively minor scandal (Watergate was two guys stealing some papers out of a hotel room), and it was compounded by the generally weak personalities of presidents like Carter and Bush I, and by the impeachment of Clinton, the challenging of the 2000 election results by Gore, and the blatant power-grabs of the current President.

We live in frightening times. Our president, a man who drove several businesses into the ground, is an international embarrassment. Our young men are dying in a war built on lies (but, hey, the cronies of this administration are making BILLIONS so who cares, right?). Our constitution has been gutted, our borders are being eliminated. Our children are "safe" in their car seats, yet now live in a completely child-UNfriendly world where, unless their parents are wealthy, they'll receive susbstandard educations, be exposed to diabetes at early ages, and grow up in a world where a dog's wellbeing is more important than that of a child.

In answer to your question - yes.

Technology has won,I regret to say and yes, most people are completely absorbed by it,particularly mass media entertainment, which has become a kind of substitute religion in a way,but more dangerously, most people let all their social and political thinking be directed by the news media. It's almost pointless to ask someone what they think,if you already know the media's view of the matter.

With all the better things in life come worse things.
You can't have everything. You need a little of both.
