There is a band called Pain that has been around for a long time some of their cd's are "Midgets With Guns" and "Wonderful Beef" they can be found on Itunes. They are one of the greatest bands that never got the publicity to make it big.

I like the Mad Caddies, myself.
Some others are Mustard Plug, Operation Ivy, Catch 22, Streetlight Manifesto, Against All Authority, the Suicide Machines, Less Than Jake, The Pietasters, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, River City Rebels , the Toasters, the Hotknives, Choking Victim, Big D and the Kids Table, Planet Smashers, Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, Leftover Crack, English Beat, Specials, Voo Doo Glow Skulls, Millencolin, Selecter...

Okay, ska obviously covers a wide range of music (even if it is just "ska.") But those are bands that would be considered ska.

Against All Authority, Suicide Machines (early stuff), Link 80, Goldfinger, Rancid, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are some of the finer punk/ska bands I can think of.

The Specials have always been one of my favorites. Look for the 2 Tone Collections with them and others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Specials

I really like the (London) Beat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beat_%28band%29 They have some hits you might know.

My former boss was the lead singer of the Brownies (CA Bay area band).

Save Ferris is fun. They are one of the few (more) recent bands I can think of that I did not see listed above. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Save_Ferris

The only ones I grew up with are The Specials, Operation Ivy (which is more up your alley), Madness, and The Toasters.
