I always have my right thumb on top and I am right-handed.
I also have noticed that I ALWAYS put my left sock and shoe on before my right sock and shoe. Maybe you can find out if one's dominant hand has anything to do with which shoe/sock they put on first or which pant leg they put their leg into first.

I am right-handed, and my left thumb was on top, right pinky on bottom. It felt unnatural when I switched positions between my hands, and I'm sure that when I clasp my hands like that, my left thumb is always automatically on top, though it feels like I could change that habit if desired.
